New BMW engine

BMW Engine announcement

Great news for the UK economy is that BMW have announced that there new petrol engine will be built in the UK. This means a real boats for the local economy.

The Birmingham built engines  are supplied to plants in

  • Germany
  • Austria
  • Oxford

They are currently used to power the

  • X1,
  • 1 Series,
  • 3 Series
  • all Mini petrol engines.

BMW made the announcement at the SMMT international Summit recently held in Canary Wharf.

This means that the new three-cylinder petrol engines will now be made exclusively at their BMW factory in Birmingham.  BMW said “Our Hams Hall engine plant, which last week celebrated production of the three-millionth engine since the plant was opened in February 2001, will make an important contribution to the future success of the new BMW  ibrand and the company’s strategy for achieving sustainable mobility. The new three-cylinder petrol engines will enable our future BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car to set new standards for dynamic performance in combination with industry-leading fuel-efficiency and low carbon emission levels.”

BMW’s i8 is a concept car which marries an electric system with a high performance three cylinder twin power Turbo engine. In typical BMW terms this means fantastic design as well as engineering which means that the engine will provide an impressive 349hp / 300Nm.

All this as well as an impressive 0-62 in under 5 seconds and an estimated 78mpg.

Thank fully it looks as though no one told BMW that electric cars where not supposed to be this much fun!
